Vartoughy, a 12 year old girl, was kicked out of her home by the Turks. Around the same time her extended family that lived not so far away was sitting at home hearing gunshots and smelling smoke. Next thing they knew their door was being kicked down and they were being ushered out by soldiers. Vartoughy was sent on marches through the desert. "Anyone who walked too slow was shot." (Vartoughy, my dreams cannot mourn) Her sister was giving birth while they were on the march. The soldiers made her give birth on a horse because they didn't want her to slow down, or to slow down anyone else. Vartoughy and her brother were the only 2 out of the family to make it through the 600 mile journey across the desert. It's not clear what happened next, but they ended up joining their father in American later.
